.app domain registration for mobile and web apps

A .app is a generic domain extension for applications, open to anyone worldwide, and every .app site must load over HTTPS because the whole extension is on the browser HSTS preload list. It suits mobile apps, web apps and software products that want an address that says what they are. You can register a .app at NameBest for 1 to 10 years, with WHOIS privacy and DNS management included.

What HTTPS only means for a .app domain

Modern browsers refuse to open any .app address over plain HTTP. They switch to HTTPS automatically, and if the site has no valid TLS certificate, the visitor sees an error instead of your page. That protects your users from tampering and snooping, but it means you need a certificate before you go live. Most hosts and app platforms issue one automatically when you connect the domain. Email, MX and TXT records are not affected, so you can set up mail and verification records in DNS management as usual.

  • Point the domain to a host that issues TLS certificates
  • Wait for the certificate before you share the address
  • Redirects on a .app also need HTTPS to work in browsers

06

Included with every .app domain

  • WHOIS privacy on the public record
  • DNS management with A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT and SRV records
  • Custom nameservers for your app platform or CDN
  • URL forwarding with 301 or 302 redirects
  • Transfer lock and the EPP code in your dashboard
  • Auto renew with reminders 30 and 7 days before expiry

07

Who should use a .app domain

A .app tells people in four letters that there is something to download or open. It works well in app store listings, ads and social bios.

  • Mobile app makers who want one link for both app stores
  • Web apps and SaaS products
  • Indie developers launching a product site
  • Companies that hold the .com and want a short product address

08

.app vs .dev, .io and .com

A .dev domain uses the same HTTPS only rule but speaks to developers rather than end users. An .io domain reads as a tech company and has no HTTPS requirement. A .com domain reaches everyone and is still the address most people guess. Many app makers run the product on .app and forward the .com. Our guide on how to choose a domain name helps you weigh name against extension.

Extension Audience HTTPS required
.app App users Yes
.dev Developers Yes
.io Tech buyers No
.com Everyone No

Renewing and transferring a .app domain

Your .app renews automatically each year at the renewal price shown here, and you can switch auto renew off per domain in the dashboard. We email you 30 and 7 days before expiry. You can extend a .app for several years at once, up to 10 years in total. To bring a .app to NameBest, unlock it at your current registrar, copy the EPP code and start a domain transfer. The transfer adds one year to the registration and most transfers finish within 5 days. A .app cannot be transferred within 60 days of registration.

Questions about .app domains

Why does my .app site show a security error?

Browsers only open .app addresses over HTTPS. If your host has not issued a TLS certificate for the domain yet, the browser shows an error. Connect the domain at your host, wait for the certificate, then try again.

Can I use a .app for email?

Yes. The HTTPS rule only applies to websites in browsers. You can add MX and TXT records for any email provider in the DNS table.

Who can register a .app?

Anyone. There is no business, residency or app store requirement. A person or company in any country can register an available .app name.

Is WHOIS privacy included for .app?

Yes. Privacy is allowed on .app and is part of the yearly price at NameBest.

Should I also register the .com for my app?

If it is available, it is a cheap way to catch people who type .com by habit. Forward it to your .app so every visitor ends up in the same place.
