How our domain name search works

When you search, we take the name you typed, clean it up and ask the registries whether it is registered. The exact extension you typed comes first, then the popular extensions, then the rest of our list in batches. Each row appears as soon as its answer arrives, so you see results in seconds instead of waiting for the whole page.

  • We lower case the name and turn accented letters into the form registries use.
  • We check the exact domain you typed first, if you typed one.
  • We then check the popular extensions, followed by more in batches as you scroll or tap Show more extensions.
  • Every price comes from our live price table, the same one on the domain prices page.

Searching does not need an account. You only create one when you check out, and your cart stays saved while you do.

What the domain search statuses mean

A status tells you what you can do with a name right now. It reflects the registry answer at the moment of the check, and we refresh it every minute.

Status What it means What you can do
Available Nobody holds this domain Add it to your cart and register it
Taken Someone already registered it Read how to buy a taken domain, or try another extension
Premium The registry sells it at a special price Check both prices and add it if it fits your budget
Checking We are waiting for the registry answer Wait a second, the row updates on its own

A domain can be taken by another buyer between your search and your payment. If that happens, you get a full refund for that domain. Read more about each status in domain search results explained.

Tips for choosing a domain extension

The extension matters less than a name people can say, spell and remember. Still, a few rules help you pick well.

  • Pick .com when it is free. People type it by habit and email it without thinking.
  • Use .io, .ai, .dev or .app for software products, where those endings are familiar to your audience.
  • Use a country extension when you sell in one country and want local trust.
  • Compare renewal prices, not only the first year. You pay the renewal every year after that.
  • Register close variants of your brand if a typo would send customers elsewhere, then forward them with domain forwarding.
  • Keep it short. Fewer letters means fewer typos and an easier logo.

See every ending and its rules on the list of available domain extensions.

Domain name search questions

Is the availability result accurate?

Yes. Every result is a live check against the registry, refreshed every minute. A domain can still be registered by someone else between your search and your payment, and in that case you get a full refund for that domain.

Why does a result show two prices?

The first price is what you pay today for the first year. The second is what the domain renews at each year after that. We show both so you know the full cost before you buy.

What does Premium mean?

Some registries price certain short or popular names higher than the standard rate. A premium result shows its own first year and renewal price, and both are clear before you add it to the cart.

The name I want is taken. What now?

Try another extension or a short variation of the name. If you want that exact domain, read how to buy a taken domain to learn how to reach the owner or watch for its expiry.

Do I need an account to search?

No. You can search and fill your cart without an account. You create one at checkout with your email and a code we send you.

Can I search for many names at once?

Search one name at a time, and each search checks it across many extensions. Add the domains you like to the cart as you go, and they stay there while you keep searching.
