While you read this, the console on the homepage is checking names against the registry in real time.

No card needed. Or run the console without an account at all.

You have three realistic places to register a domain for a Shopify store, and they optimize for different things. Buy inside Shopify for the least friction: the name auto-connects with no DNS work and WHOIS privacy is included, but Shopify Help states domain hosting services are only available with a paid Shopify plan. Buy at an independent registrar for the lowest long term cost and an asset that survives a replatform. Buy on a marketplace if the name you actually want is already registered, which is the situation most merchants hit within about ten minutes of searching.

The choice looks trivial because the money is small. A domain is $10 to $30 a year against a store that costs hundreds of dollars a month to run, so most people click whatever is in front of them and move on. That is usually fine. It stops being fine in two specific situations, and both of them are worth ten minutes of thought before you click.

The first is the name you want being taken, which sends you down a path of hyphens and .store substitutes that you will live with for years. The second is the day you leave the platform. Neither shows up in a price comparison, so this article puts both in the table.

Registry wholesale is the floor under all of it. Verisign charges registrars $10.26 for a year of .com and ICANN adds $0.20 on gTLDs, so about $10.46 is the cost of goods beneath every .com sold anywhere. Verisign raises that to $10.97 on November 1, 2026, and every registrar passes it on. Anyone advertising a .com below roughly $10.46 is discounting the first year and recovering it later, which is normal and not dishonest, but it means the advertised number is not the price.

Does Shopify give you a domain?

Not a real one. Every store gets a myshopify.com address automatically, and that works perfectly well for testing. It is not a domain you own, you cannot take it anywhere, and it signals to a customer that the store is a side project. Shopify does run promotions that include a domain with an annual plan, but the ordinary path is that you buy the name, either through Shopify or elsewhere.

Buying inside the admin is genuinely low friction. Shopify states the exact price for your chosen domain and extension is shown upfront before you complete the purchase, with no hidden fees, and that the domain auto-connects to your store with no manual configuration, like changing DNS records, required. For a first store that is worth real money in avoided confusion.

Do I need to buy a domain for Shopify?

You need one to launch properly, but you do not need to buy it from Shopify. Registering elsewhere and pointing it at the store is fully supported and is what most agencies do. The mechanics are ordinary: an A record on the root and a CNAME on www, using the values Shopify shows in the admin. It takes about five minutes and then behaves identically to a Shopify-bought domain for customers.

The reason to keep the registration outside the platform is independence. Shopify Help states that if you want to deactivate your store or your Shopify account, but you want to keep using your domain, then you need to transfer your domain before you deactivate your store. That is a clear, honest disclosure, and it is also the whole argument. A name held at a registrar has an expiry date and no other conditions. A name held on a commerce platform has a subscription attached to it.

How much that matters depends on how settled you are. A merchant four years into the same store will never notice. Somebody launching a first store, still testing whether the product works at all, is buying an option rather than a storefront, and options are better held somewhere neutral.

How much does a Shopify domain cost?

Shopify states that domains typically start at $9 USD/year, billed annually. That is the entry point across hundreds of extensions rather than the price of a .com, which cannot go below the roughly $10.46 registry floor. The specific price appears in the admin before you confirm.

On renewals Shopify publishes no rate card and says only that renewal pricing may differ from initial purchase and can change over time. Domains are sold in one year terms, set to auto-renew by default, and Shopify Help adds that you need to pay the registration fee every year to renew your domain subscription. Domain purchases are also non-refundable, which is standard everywhere because the registry fee is spent the moment the name is created. We break the numbers down further in our guide to what a Shopify domain name costs.

Compare that to a registrar that publishes one figure for registration, renewal and transfer. Knowing the renewal price in year two before you buy is the single most useful thing a domain seller can tell you, and it is the thing platform sellers are least likely to publish.

Can I use my own domain with Shopify?

Yes, and there are two versions of it. You can connect an external domain by editing DNS, leaving the registration where it is, or you can transfer the registration into Shopify so everything sits on one invoice. Shopify supports both, and it supports transferring back out again at any time, subject to ICANN and registry rules.

Connecting without transferring is the option that keeps your choices open. The store lives on Shopify, the name lives at a registrar, and replatforming later becomes a DNS change rather than a migration. If you are running paid traffic or email on the domain, that separation is worth having, because moving the name to another registrar under time pressure is exactly when the 60 day locks bite, and it is cheaper to have picked the registrar deliberately in the first place.

There are three of those locks and none of them can be waived by any registrar: 60 days from initial registration, 60 days from a previous transfer, and a fresh 60 days triggered by changing the registrant contact details. That last one catches people who tidy up their WHOIS record and then try to move the name the same week.

What if the domain I want is already taken?

This is where every availability search, Shopify's included, runs out of answers. A registrar search asks one question: does this string exist in the registry right now. If it does, you get suggestions. Add a word, add a hyphen, try .store or .shop instead. Those are real options and sometimes the right ones, but they are all substitutes for the name you actually wanted.

The other question, what would it take to own the name that does exist, has a completely separate set of venues. A registered name can be listed by its owner with an asking price, sitting in a live auction, or running through the expiry cycle toward a drop. None of those show up in a store builder's search box, which is why most merchants never learn the option existed.

NameBest is on none of those paths. It sells no domains, lists nothing and runs no auctions. What it does is the step before: generate candidates from a line about the business, put every one to the registry through RDAP, and hand back the names nobody holds with a labelled value estimate beside each. That estimate is a model output and decision support, never a guarantee of what a name is worth. If the name you wanted is genuinely gone, our guide to buying a domain that is already taken covers how the negotiation usually goes.

A commerce name is disproportionately likely to be in this category. Good store names are common words or two-word compounds, which is precisely the inventory that was registered a decade ago and now trades rather than sits available.

How do I transfer or cancel a Shopify domain?

Transferring away is supported and documented. You can move the registration to another Shopify store or to a different provider, and the standard ICANN rules apply, including the 60 day lock on new registrations and recent transfers. The receiving registrar usually adds a year to the registration, so the move rarely wastes money.

Order of operations is the part worth getting right. If the store is winding down, start the transfer while the account is still active and paid, then deactivate once the name has landed. Doing it the other way round turns a two minute task into a support conversation, and if a transfer lock happens to be active you may not be able to act on the day you decide to.

So which registrar should a Shopify merchant use?

If your store is already on Shopify, the name you want is unregistered, and you value not thinking about DNS, buy it in the admin. The free privacy is real, the auto-connect is real, and the plan requirement is already paid.

If you want the lowest predictable cost over ten years, a flat-price registrar wins, with Porkbun's identical register, renew and transfer figure being the easiest version to reason about. If your infrastructure is already behind Cloudflare and you can live with using its nameservers, at-cost pricing is hard to argue with. Our comparison of which registrar to leave a domain at goes through the trade-offs in more depth, and the Cloudflare Registrar constraint, which is that you have to move your nameservers to Cloudflare, is the one people discover too late.

If the name you want belongs to someone else, none of the above matters, because none of them sell it. That is the case for starting on a marketplace instead. NameBest is not one: it sells nothing and lists nothing, it generates names and proves them free against the registry, which is the cheaper answer when the name you wanted is gone.

One last thing that has nothing to do with domains and everything to do with the launch that follows it. The domain is the cheapest decision in the whole project and the only one you cannot cheaply reverse later. Everything after it, the theme, the apps, the ad accounts, even the social proof you collect from early customers, can be swapped out in an afternoon. Spend the ten minutes on the name.

If you are still at the naming stage rather than the buying stage, start with a business name generator and check the shortlist against real availability before you fall in love with anything. And remember that the generators check the domain only. They do not search state entity databases or the federal trademark register, and clearing a name with a registrar is not a legal clearance.

Shopify quotations are its own published wording on shopify.com/domains and in Shopify Help as read on September 2, 2026. Porkbun and Cloudflare figures are each company's own published information verified August 2026. Namecheap renewal pricing is given as a range because published sources conflict. Domain pricing changes, so verify before you buy.
