Expired domains and how to get yours back in time
When a domain expires, it stops working but is not lost right away. It first enters a grace period, usually up to 30 days, when the owner can renew it at the normal price, then a redemption period, usually 30 days, when it can be restored for a registry fee, and only then is it deleted and released for anyone to register.

The life cycle of expired domains
Exact lengths vary by registry, and our renewal policy lists them for every extension we sell. The usual timeline for generic extensions looks like this.

What stops working when a domain expires
On the expiry date the registrar points the domain to a parking page or stops its DNS. Your website goes offline, email to addresses on the domain bounces or goes nowhere, and any service that checks the domain, such as a login or payment provider, can fail. The longer it stays expired, the more search rankings and email reputation you lose. That is why auto renew is on by default for every NameBest domain, with reminders 30 and 7 days before expiry. How to recover an expired domain at NameBest
- Step 1. Sign in and open Domains. Expired domains are marked In grace period or In redemption.
- Step 2. Open the domain and go to the Renewal tab.
- Step 3. In the grace period, click Renew now and pay the normal renewal price.
- Step 4. In redemption, the restore fee set by the registry is shown before you pay. Confirm to restore and renew.
- Step 5. The domain starts resolving again within minutes to a few hours, with your DNS records intact.
If your domain is at another registrar, recover it there first. Most registrars do not accept a transfer in the redemption period.

Can you register someone else's expired domain
Yes, but only after it has gone through the whole cycle and been released. Until then, the owner has the first right to renew or restore it. Most expired domains are renewed in grace, so watching a name often ends with nothing. - Check the expiry date in the public record. Read who owns a domain to find it.
- Remember the date plus about 75 days, the usual end of grace, redemption and pending delete.
- Search the name on NameBest when that day comes. If it shows Available, register it right away.

How to make sure your own domain never expires
- Keep auto renew on for every domain you need.
- Keep a valid card in Payment methods and update it before it expires.
- Use a registrant and account email that you read, not one on the domain itself.
- Renew important domains for several years at once.
- Check the Expiring in 30 days filter in your dashboard once a month.

Expired domains questions
How long after a domain expires can I renew it?
Usually up to 30 days at the normal price in the grace period, then about 30 more days in redemption with a registry restore fee. Exact figures per extension are in our renewal policy.
Will my website and email come back after renewal?
Yes. Once the domain is renewed, it starts resolving again with the same DNS records, usually within minutes to a few hours.
What is the redemption fee?
It is a fee the registry charges to restore a deleted domain during redemption. It is set per registry and shown in your dashboard before you pay.
Can I buy an expired domain before it is released?
Not from us. During grace and redemption only the current owner can renew or restore it. You can register it once it is released, if nobody else does first.
Does an expired domain keep its search rankings?
Rankings fall while the site is offline. If you renew within the grace period, most rankings return. A domain that was deleted and registered again usually starts from scratch.
