Set up URL forwarding

URL forwarding sends visitors from your domain to another web address. Open the Forwarding tab of the domain, enter the target address, choose a 301 or 302 redirect and decide whether paths are kept. Forwarding is included with every domain and works over HTTP and HTTPS.

301 or 302, which redirect to choose

Type Use it when Effect on search engines
301 permanent The domain has moved for good, or you bought an extra domain for your brand Search engines pass the old domain's value to the target
302 temporary You send traffic somewhere for a campaign or a short period Search engines keep the old domain as the main address

If you are unsure, choose 301 for a domain that will always point to the same place.

Set up forwarding step by step

1. Open the Forwarding tab

Go to Dashboard, then Domains, select the domain and open the Forwarding tab.

2. Choose the source

Leave the source empty to forward the whole domain, or enter a path such as /shop to forward only that address. Forwarding covers both the bare domain and www.

3. Enter the target address

Type the full address, starting with https://. It can be another domain, a page on your website or a social profile.

4. Choose the redirect type and path handling

Pick 301 or 302. Switch on Keep path if a visitor to yourdomain.com/about should land on the same /about page at the target.

5. Save

The redirect starts working within a few minutes. Open your domain in a private browser window to check it.

Common forwarding setups

  • Forward an old brand domain to your new site with a 301 and Keep path on.
  • Forward a misspelled version of your domain to the correct one.
  • Forward a campaign domain to a landing page with a 302.
  • Forward /blog to an external blog address while the rest of the domain points to your site.

Forwarding does not work. What should I check?

Forwarding needs our nameservers. If the Nameservers tab shows custom nameservers, set up the redirect at that DNS provider, or switch back. See change nameservers. Also remove any A or CNAME record that points the same host elsewhere.

Does forwarding affect my email?

No. MX records keep working while web traffic is forwarded. See add MX records.

Can I hide the target address in the browser bar?

We forward with real 301 and 302 redirects only, so the visitor sees the target address. Masked framing breaks on many sites and hurts search ranking, so we do not offer it.
