How to get an EPP code

An EPP code, also called an auth code or transfer code, is the password that proves you may move a domain to another registrar. At NameBest you get it in the Dashboard, under the Transfer lock and EPP code tab of the domain. At another registrar it sits in a similar place in their domain settings.

Get the EPP code from your NameBest dashboard

1. Open the domain

Sign in, go to Dashboard, then Domains, and select the domain you want to move.

2. Open the Transfer lock and EPP code tab

The tab shows the current lock state and a Show EPP code button.

3. Turn off the transfer lock

Switch Transfer lock off. A locked domain cannot leave, even with the correct code. The lock is part of domain account security, so turn it off only when you are ready to move.

4. Copy the code

Click Show EPP code and copy it exactly. Codes are case sensitive and often contain symbols. We also email the code to the registrant email address so the owner always knows a transfer is being prepared.

5. Start the transfer at the new registrar

Paste the code where the new registrar asks for it. The registrant may receive an email to approve the transfer.

Get the EPP code from another registrar

Look in the domain settings of your current registrar for words like transfer, auth code, authorization code or EPP. Most registrars show it in the panel or email it to the registrant contact. Before you request it, check these points.

  • The domain was registered or changed owner more than 60 days ago. Read about the 60 day transfer lock.
  • The domain is not expired or in a redemption period.
  • The registrant email address works, because approval emails go there.
  • The transfer lock is off.

Then paste the code on our domain transfer page. The transfer adds one year to the registration.

The new registrar says the code is invalid. What now?

Copy the code again without spaces at the start or end. If it still fails, generate a new code in the same tab and use the new one. Old codes stop working once a new one is created.

Do I need to turn off WHOIS privacy?

At NameBest, no. Some registrars ask you to turn it off so their approval email can reach you. The WHOIS privacy explained guide covers how privacy affects transfers.

Will my website stop during the transfer?

Not if the DNS stays the same. Keep the current nameservers until the transfer completes. See domain transfer status.
