Update registrant contact details

The registrant is the legal owner of a domain, and ICANN rules require their contact details to be accurate. You update them in the Registrant tab of the domain. Small updates such as a phone number apply right away. A change of the owner name, organization or email is a change of registrant and needs confirmation.

Small updates and changes of owner

Phone, postal address Update None No
Name or organization Change of registrant Email to the current registrant Yes, unless you opt out
Email address Change of registrant Email to the old and new address Yes, unless you opt out

Update contact details step by step

1. Open the Registrant tab

Go to Dashboard, then Domains, select the domain and open the Registrant tab.

2. Click Edit

Change the fields you need. Choose Person or Company to match the legal owner.

3. Decide about the transfer lock

If you change the name, organization or email, we ask whether to allow transfers in the next 60 days. Tick Allow transfer within 60 days only if you plan to move the domain soon. Read about the 60 day transfer lock.

4. Save and confirm

For a change of registrant, the current registrant receives an email with a confirmation link. The change applies once it is confirmed. Both the old and the new registrant then receive a notice.

5. Verify the new email

If the email address changed, we send a verification link to it. Click it within 15 days. See verify registrant email.

Update many domains at once

In the Domains list, tick the domains, then choose Edit registrant from the bulk actions. The same rules for confirmation and the 60 day lock apply to each domain.

I sold the domain. How do I hand it over?

Change the registrant to the buyer and confirm. If the buyer uses another registrar, give them the EPP code after the change. See how to get an EPP code.

I no longer have access to the old registrant email. What now?

Write to [email protected] from your account email and include the domain name. We verify that you control the account and the domain before we help with the change.
